Residential
The Silos
The conversion of four disused concrete silos to a seven-level apartment building in Richmond was one of the most controversial residential projects undertaken by Probuild, It was the first conversion of this type in Australia and one of only a few in the world.
The project comprised six, 15-square apartments and a 2-level, 20-square penthouse. Outwardly the development resembles a rocket, an image which is reinforced by the cylindrical form of the silos, while from the street, the impression is of a ship, with seven bow-like balconies rising above the predominantly low-rise area to create a strong profile.
The shape of the building, with its mix of circular sections and rocket-shaped spaces, demanded and received meticulous construction detailing, resulting in the delivery of seven highly original and distinctive apartments. Ground floor parking, storage areas, lobby and a security lift were included in this high quality residential development, which was completed on time despite severe site constraints.
